GPS-free navigation system: how it works
Problem
The main reason for UAV losses on the frontline is the active work of enemy EW devices. This devices is the main reason why Ukrainian defenders lose civilian UAVs every day.
The reason is simple – most civilian UAVs have neither special protection against EW nor, even more so, alternative options of flight navigation.
Solution
To solve this problem, the DRONEPRO team has developed a navigation system for our UAVs that doesn’t require a GPS signal.
For its implementation, we combined two methods:
- Visual odometry – a video stream analysis technology of using optics to determine the location of UAVs. Our UAVs use a system of unique points in the image, such as buildings or the landscape, to identify its position.
- Inertial navigation – a technology that uses gyroscopes and accelerometers to measure the acceleration and change in speed of the UAV. With the help of this data, our drones adjust their position and orientation in space in addition to the operation of the visual odometry.
Result
Thanks to this development, DRONEPRO UAVs are already making a difference in the most EW-intense areas of the frontline (against Russian R-330Zh «Zhitel», RB-301B «Borysoglebsk-2», Repellent-1, Layer-2, etc.) and small stationary EW (so-called «trench EW»).
